Mateo Summit

You are here:

It is located within the Huascarán National Park, in the Ulta ravine within the province of Carhuaz and belongs to the mountain system of the Contrahierbas snow-capped mountain.

The ascent to Nevado Mateo has become a very popular challenge among the mountaineers of Peru, as well as those who are starting out in mountaineering because it is a friendly, short and easily accessible mountain for people who wish to realize the dream of climbing their first mountain.

Itinerary:

It starts at 3:00 am in the city of Huaraz. The guide will go to your respective hotel to pick you up with transportation. Then, we head north along Callejón de Huaylas to the small town of Carhuaz, where we will make a detour east to the Punta Olímpica tunnel located at 4,750 meters above sea level in Quebrada Ulta. The estimated time of arrival is 6:00 am.

After equipping ourselves and dressing appropriately for the ascent, we will do an approach trek to Nevado Mateo. The first part is a flat path to the base of the moraine. The change in slope occurs in the morainic area of the glacier. You will overcome this section with the assistance of your guide, who will fix ropes if necessary for your safety.

After 1 hour and a half of trekking and climbing, you will reach the glacier, where you will equip yourself and rope up with the assistance of the guides to ascend to the summit of Nevado Mateo. The ascent lasts an hour and a half. Your efforts during the climb will be rewarded with the arrival at the long-awaited summit of Nevado Mateo.

From the summit you can enjoy splendid views of the emblematic mountains of the Cordillera Blanca: Huascarán Sur and Norte, Chopicalqui, Ulta, Contrahierbas, Chacraraju and the beautiful Cancaracá and Shulla lagoons.

After staying at the summit for a reasonable amount of time to rest, hydrate and take photos, we will descend along the same route. The time to reach our starting point will depend on your energy. When we reach Punta Olímpica, we take off our equipment and return to Huaraz.
